THERE IS MORE TO WEIGHT LOSS THAN COUNTING CALORIES

Applied Weight Loss Nutrition: Science, Strategy & Practice

5 PART LECTURE SERIES

For health practitioners and health-motivated individuals who want to understand the science of weight loss nutrition and learn how to apply it in practice.

Applied Weight Loss Nutrition 700

Weight loss isn’t as simple as “eat less, move more.”

Behind every client’s goal is a complex mix of physiology, metabolism, mindset, and lifestyle patterns. Without a clear framework, both practitioners and individuals can end up frustrated by stalled progress, fatigue, or unsustainable results.

That’s why this training course goes beyond fad diets and quick fixes.

This training series explores the science and practical strategies of weight loss nutrition, helping you to separate evidence from myth and build approaches that truly work.

What You'll Learn

Each lecture builds on the last, combining nutrition science with practical strategies you can apply immediately.

Applied Weight Loss Nutrition (7)

Foundations of Fuel, Metabolism & Sustainable Fat Loss

This session sets up the core science and practical framework for the whole program. Key areas covered include:

  • How the body burns fuel across aerobic, anaerobic, and phosphagen systems — and why metabolic flexibility matters.

  • Mitochondria, muscle and longevity — how fitness, stress and daily movement influence fat-burning capacity.

  • Protein, carbs and fats in weight loss — realistic daily targets, when each macronutrient matters most, and how to support hormones and metabolism.

  • Training nutrition timing — what to eat before, during and after exercise, including when fasted training works and when it backfires.

  • Hormones, stress and metabolic adaptation — why sleep, cortisol, and chronic dieting affect fat loss outcomes.

  • Practical tools for clients and practitioners — simple tracking methods, small daily deficits, and movement strategies that make progress easier.

  • Setting up for success — how to personalise macronutrients, protect muscle, and approach fat loss without restriction or overwhelm.

This module creates the science-based foundation for everything that follows, making the physiology easy to understand and apply in real life.

Module 2: Metabolic Flexibility, Hormones & Real-World Fat Loss

This session unpacks the deeper physiology behind sustainable weight change — how hormones, stress, sleep, gut health and training style all influence how the body burns fuel.

Key topics covered:

  • How thyroid, cortisol, insulin and appetite hormones regulate metabolism and why chronic dieting slows it down.

  • Fat vs carbohydrate metabolism, metabolic flexibility, and how stress, poor sleep and restrictive eating blunt fat burning.

  • The role of strength training, NEAT and recovery in maintaining muscle, bone health and metabolic rate — especially for women in perimenopause.

  • Blood glucose control, cravings, emotional eating and how meal composition affects mood, energy and sleep.

  • Circadian rhythm, digestion and gut health as major drivers of hunger, energy regulation and inflammation.

  • Practical behaviour tools: tracking with awareness, interpreting CGM-style patterns, and supporting clients through realistic, physiology-first strategies.

This module shows that fat loss isn’t about eating less, it’s about helping the body function better so it can burn fuel efficiently.

Applied Weight Loss Nutrition (3)

Module 3: Practical Weight-Loss Strategies & Fasting Approaches

This session moves from theory into real-world application — how to tailor weight-loss plans, choose the right fasting model, and support clients through the behavioural and physiological hurdles that affect progress.

Key topics covered:

  • The real reasons people gain or can’t lose weight: stress, hormones, gut health, sleep disruption, inflammation, medications and low movement.

  • Clinical essentials: useful testing, identifying inflammatory foods and setting realistic, personalised goals.

  • Foundations first: circadian rhythm alignment, sleep hygiene, stress reduction and consistent movement before tightening diet.

  • Practical nutrition: tracking for awareness, protein-focused meals, carb timing after training, portion guidance and reducing alcohol.

  • Fasting tools: TRE, 5:2, fasting-mimicking diets, PSMF and cyclical dieting — when they help and when to avoid them.

  • Meal timing & chrono-nutrition: eating with daylight, avoiding late-night meals and using post-meal walks for glucose control.

  • Training integration: strength work 2–3× weekly, refuelling after exercise and avoiding fasting paired with high-intensity training.

  • Behavioural factors: emotional eating, dopamine-driven patterns, habit building and keeping goals simple and achievable.

This module focuses on practical, safe, personalised strategies clients can actually follow — bridging physiology with everyday habits.

Module 4: Understanding Body Types & Chronobiology for Weight Loss

This session, led by Dr Cam McDonald, explores how different body types process fuel, handle stress, and respond to training. Instead of a one-size-fits-all plan, the focus is on tailoring nutrition, movement and routine to each person’s physiology.

Key topics covered:

  • The five main body types and how they differ in metabolism, hormones, appetite and stress response.

  • How circadian rhythm, temperament and nervous-system patterns influence weight-loss success.

  • Nutrition differences between types — protein needs, carb timing and fasting suitability.

  • Exercise strategies aligned to each type — strength, intervals, endurance or recovery-focused training.

  • Clinical insight into why some clients don’t respond to generic programs and how to adjust safely.

A practical, personalised framework for matching strategies to the individual, not forcing the individual into the strategy.

Module 5: Practical Plans, Supplements & Real-World Weight-Loss Application

In this module, we pull everything together into a clear, usable system you can apply immediately with clients:

  • How to personalise weight-loss plans without overcomplicating them.

  • Key supplements that genuinely support results (and how to choose the right ones).

  • How to integrate gluten- and dairy-free phases without overwhelming clients.

  • Practical daily habits that drive consistency: protein targets, meal timing, movement and sleep.

  • Using continuous glucose monitors to individualise carb choices.

  • Strategies for handling the common roadblocks — alcohol, stress, appetite, digestive issues and plateaus.

A realistic lecture focused on what clients can actually stick to, and how practitioners can adapt the plan based on physiology, lifestyle and progress.

Clients don’t need more generic advice;
they need practitioners who understand how weight loss really works.

Every day, practitioners are dealing with clients who are stressed, under-fuelled, sleeping poorly, confused by online advice, stuck on plateaus, or frustrated that “nothing is working.” Real results require more than calories, meal plans, or motivational chats. They require practitioners who understand:

  • Metabolism beyond macros — how hormones, energy systems, sleep, stress, gut health, circadian rhythms and training load shape weight change.

  • Individual variation — why two clients can follow the same plan and get completely different outcomes.

  • Female physiology — menstrual cycles, perimenopause, menopause, and the hormonal shifts that directly affect cravings, metabolism and fat oxidation.
  • Behavioural reality — alcohol, burnout, emotional eating, inconsistent tracking, and all the small daily decisions that derail progress.

  • Evidence-based supplementation — what works, what doesn’t, and what genuinely moves the needle for different client types.

  • Programming for sustainability — how to plan, pace and adjust weight-loss phases safely so clients don’t crash, rebound or give up.

Metabolic Health UH Icons (10)

Learning this knowledge means practitioners can:

  • Build programs that work in the real world, not just on paper.

  • Troubleshoot plateaus with confidence instead of guessing.

  • Support clients through different life stages without fear or confusion.

  • Understand the “why” behind each tool — and teach it clearly.

  • Deliver results that clients can maintain, not just achieve.

In short: practitioners need this because weight loss is complex and clients rely on you to cut through the noise.

This training gives you the physiology, the frameworks, and the practical tools to do that well.
