Should Teenagers supplement?

Teenage health

The Teenage years mark a crucial period of growth and development, including both physical and mental. During this time, teenagers undergo rapid body changes, placing unique demands on their nutritional needs.

As a sports nutritionist/naturopath, I often encounter questions regarding the role of supplements in teenage diets.

Should teenagers supplement? Is it necessary, or even safe, for them to do so?

In this article, we'll explore these questions and the potential benefits and risks of teen…

Metabolic Health and Vitality for Women Over 40

3

In this podcast episode, Lara Briden and I share a closer look at metabolic health for women over 40, specifically:

  • The missing health science for mid-life women and the science sex gap.
  • The dynamics between insulin, mitochondria, and cellular metabolism.
  • How the nutritional advice often suggested for men and young women does not always apply to mid-life women.
  • The role of muscle and mitochondria in health and metabolism.
  • Updated weight loss strategies for women over 40.
  • If the ketogenic…

Does Exercise Help The Immune System?

Today I'd like to answer the question, does exercise help the immune system?

I recently wrote a blog on training, exercise, and being sick. You can find my guide on how to gauge if you should train or compete while sick here.

I’ve had a lot of feedback from peeps saying it’s a quick and easy way to help them decide if they should skip a day or not.

And what I heard from a lot of you is that at times, there's a lot of pressure to “show up.” Some of you DM’d or emailed me saying you had a sense of re…

Why You Shouldn't Train When You're Sick

The days are shorter, the nights are colder, and there is a crisp chill in the air.  This means that down here in the Southern Hemisphere, cold and flu season is here. This begs the question - should you exercise when sick?

Now, before I tell you all about my top nutrients for immune support (stay tuned for a later blog), I want to talk about the second most popular question my athletic and sporty clients ask me at this time of year ...
“Can I train if I’m sick with...?”
Often, I’ve got an athlet…

Mindful Eating

The idea of ‘being mindful’ and ‘practicing mindfulness’ has been getting a fair bit of airplay of late. After the year that shall not be mentioned, many of my friends, family, and clients are all wanting to be more mindful or mindfully aware as they move throughout their days. Many of them use apps to help with mindful meditations, mindful mantras, or practicing mindfulness in the everyday; but what about mindful eating?

Hard to digest?

Where does digestion start? Does it start in the gut, wher…

Finding routine in the chaos

Ok I must admit I have been hesitant to write a blog this month, my inbox is overflowing with email alerts, blogs and how to stay healthy via.... (insert idea here). So what do I have to add to the noise I ask myself?

I thought instead of sending out lists of immune boosting foods and workout videos (just kidding I am not a personal trainer) I would take you through what I have learned about trying to stay healthy while doing an isolation vacation.  Don’t get me wrong, I know this is not a holid…

Ready to Reset

The typical conversations you hear again and again as we roll into January.. everyone is all about loosing weight, clearing their thoughts, starting a fresh. Basically transforming into a new and improved version of the year before.

I have said before that I don't like to set resolutions or start restrictive plans but one thing I do love to do is have a little food holiday. Whether you want to reset unhealthy eating habits, lose weight, or just improve your overall health, a food holiday and swit…

Bloom where you are planted

There seems to be a misconception that Self Care is all about treating yourself to a day off or having a massage, which as a result means many individuals push it aside claiming they don’t have the time or can’t afford it.

Simple confusion. It does not have to take any extra time from your day that you valuably need nor does it need to cost you anything. It is purely looking after yourself both mentally and physically.

So what’s my first and easiest version? Ensuring your thoughts are those that…

Depression, Anxiety, Stress.. they are not such dirty words..

Kira asked me to guest post for her this month on stress, family and mental health… Why? Because I have been there, got the T Shirt, worn it to death, taken it off, washed it and now it hangs firmly in my closet to remind me of the lessons learnt along its journey.

Everyone’s story is different, and everyone’s story is personal, but they all have common traits and outcomes and that is what I want to talk about.

There is no shame in suffering from anxiety or depression. It can stem from childhood…

Breathing Deep at my Extreme Wellness Retreat

In April this year I made it to LEVEL 50 which is pretty exciting seeing as how much I have managed to pack in within that time and if I stay as well as I hope I will get another 40 levels or so (years that is). I am not a fan of big parties as it feels like a million ½ conversations so instead I chose to do a few smaller things with family and friends and then I took myself off on a solo adventure. If you have met me before this is not a surprise as firstly I love travel, second I love nature a…
